Paul Smith is not only one of my favorite comic book artists, but he actually drew the first issue of X-Men that I ever purchased. If you lump in the amazing Chris Claremont, Paul may actually be the reason I started reading/collecting comics.
I was 10 years old in the fall of 1983 and like most boys my age, loved super-heroes, Star Wars and GI Joe! I watched Spider-man and his Amazing Friends on Saturday mornings and watched re-runs of the Superfriends every weekday after school. As wonderful as both shows were, they did not prepare me for the world of costumed soap-opera that awaited me.
Paul Smith had a unique and modern style. Since I was only familiar with the “house” art styles of DC and Marvel, I had no idea that super-heroes could look THAT cool. When you combine the intricate Claremont plots, I was hooked.
We choose to do our first featured creator in A Comic Book Education’s Creator Corner on the great Paul Smith - check it out here - and briefly covered his career and his most recognizable titles.
