Post-Infinity… I hope everyone had a great Christmas!  I wasn’t expecting too many comics to be released as it is the holidays, but a few did come out and I’m glad that one of them was the Hickman’s Avengers.  This is the first of Hickman’s stories to take place after the Infinity event and it feels like it.  All the craziness has subsided.  Everyone is in a good mood, cooking out and shooting target practice.

You Were Never Here…

The opening page of the issue however betrays this happiness.  In the “previously in Avengers,” Hickman hints that he  will be addressing, finally, what the Illuminati did to Captain America: erasing his memory because he disagreed with their ideas.

I can only imagine how awful these repercussions will be.  Maybe Cap will just leave all together, jaded by what has happened between he and his friends.  Maybe they will shoot him off to another planet like Hulk!  But most likely this will be a physical conflict that will seriously damage everyone involved, both physically and emotionally.   I’m not sure how Tony or any of the other members of the Illuminati are going to be able to justify their actions.

We Can Use This…I can Help Them…

In this story we have a future Stark from 3030 coming back into the current timeline.  We find out that there is a rogue planet that is coming towards earth.  It is intimated that it has been shot at earth, rather than some random event.  Tony seems to have already known about this, and the future Stark only reaffirms his fears.  The future Stark is a bit of an enigma and her intentions are not wholly clear at the start.  As the issue unfolds, we learn that instead of helping them destroy the rogue planet, she allows the rogue  planet to hit earth.  When it does so, it envelopes earth, allowing them to occupy the same space.

Because It’s Christmas…

Tony questions what has happened and her true motivation is revealed.  She tells him that they can use the rogue planet for resources and extracting energy, something that will help everyone who will question what has happened.  This is certainly true, but there is a secondary reason: she has given Tony a weapon, a very powerful weapon, just for him.  She lets him know he will need it  because everything he has been hiding is about to come out.  Everyone will be after Stark to kill him when the secrets are unleashed.  How will this happen is anyone’s guess.

Final Thoughts…

This issue was certainly the quiet before the storm.  I’m really excited to see what is going to come of this.  This was another great issue by Hickman.  It wasn’t perfect though.  I dislike when there are multiple artists on a book.  I understand the need, but this book had four artists and four colorists.  The differences in style were a bit jarring, even it was only for a few pages.  I’m also not a fan of time travel.  It is confusing and this point is even raised in the book itself.  One last thing, Cap getting his memory erased happened in New Avengers, not Avengers.  I wonder if people that were only reading Avengers were confused by what was happening because it is never mentioned in the Avengers comic until now.  This is my problem with comics that loosely tie in to one another.  Sometimes they do not impart the important information which makes you have to read multiple titles to get the full story, and this is certainly the case here.  If Cap having his memory erased is a big deal, we should have heard about it earlier in the Avengers run as well.   I realize it has always been done this way, it is a marketing and money thing, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. Just my humble opinion.  That aside, this issue has really opened up the series and put it in a new direction, one that I’m happy to follow.
